Lauren Engineers & Constructors, Inc

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Abilene, TX

What I liked

Every person at the company was excellent to work with. I learned more during my internship than I have in three years of college. The company treated me as one of their engineers and it made for a better experience. I was able to work on actual projects, even to the point of charging time to those projects, which gave me a good idea of what work in the industry is like.

What I wish was different

Some weeks were slow in terms of the projects that the company was working on so there was not always work to do. It was usually balanced nicely, however, with very busy weeks that kept me active.

Advice

When you are new to a position, especially coming out of college, you feel like you have to be an expert who knows everything. Understand that most of what you need to know will be learned on the job, so don't be afraid to ask questions and seek help. It's better to ask lots of questions and get it right than to think you have to know everything and make lots of mistakes. Mistakes will happen, but don't let it be because you did not seek help.
