What I liked

Working as a research fellow, I got to work closely with faculty. There was a nice balance between guidance and independence.

What I wish was different

While my experience was fantastic, I think that getting off campus and out of my comfort zone would have been more valuable for me.

Communicate with your professors: they may have opportunities for you that you won't even know about unless you do! Sit in the front of your classes and participate so that your professors know who you are and want to work with you, too!

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I enjoyed getting to use different software to design curriculum. I now have skills using Moodle and Audacity that can be applied to other positions in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more structure to the research. I was working 40 hours a week, but it didn’t feel like my advisor had given me a concrete plan of what I should be working on. I think I would have accomplished more if we had collaborate more and established goals and a plan from the very beginning of the internship.

Summer Assistant Researcher

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I really liked being exposed to what research is like as an undergrad. I enjoyed having the supervision and direction of my professor while still having an independent research project to do. I enjoyed gaining new skills in the lab and learning how to better use different technology. Learning the many techniques for my data collection for my research was an amazing experience.

What I wish was different

I just wished it lasted longer because I enjoyed it so much and research is a long journey. It takes trial and error to answer certain questions and to work towards an answer. 10 weeks just isn’t enough time time!

Advice

Don’t be afraid to apply to research. Apply to a professors research whose research you genuinely like. Ask upperclassmen questions about their day to day experience and what research with that professor was like.

Lawrence University Research Fellow

June - September 2019 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I liked the independence it gave me. I was able to come in on my own time to complete my work and that I worked on a project that was fine.

What I wish was different

Advice

If you’re going into research go in with an open mind. Your project you are working on it could work, it could not work and it could give you results you weren’t expecting. All of those outcomes are valid results as you’re learning something. Working on a project without knowing what I’m supposed to be getting was frustrating but having an open mind allowed me to change my perspective.

Desk CLerk

June 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I liked the environment, it was very relaxing and gave me an idea of what a front desk job would be like. I enjoyed it. It gave me customer service skills.

What I wish was different

I honestly don't think anything should have been different. It was a really nice position. I guess I wish it could have been a longer experience. If there are more opportunities like this I will make sure to apply for them.

Advice

Just to ask around and check for events that offer front desk or service desk opportunities because they can go pretty quickly
