Summer Faculty Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I appreciated the opportunity to explore a research project over a longer period of time, and develop my lab skills so that I can perform and design experiments with a much larger degree of autonomy.

What I wish was different

Advice

Make sure you spend some time on primary research articles or manuals about the subject or the method that you are working with so that you can be more proficient and make fewer mistakes, as well as to maybe think of ways of improving the method

Annual Giving, Major and Planned Giving, and Development Operations Intern

June 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I like the work environment. They people that I work with are wonderful, and it has been a very positive experience working with them. I also like how I am able to work on a variety of projects from researching giving programs at other universities, to creating loyal to Lawrence letters, to updating the giving pages on the Lawrence University website.

What I wish was different

I don't really wish for anything different because this internship hasn't disappointed me in any way.

Advice

I would advise others to pace themselves well. I worked very efficiently early on, which put me in situations with less to do.j

Program Assistant for FAI

August - September 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved being able to socialize with the incoming freshmen and getting to meet a lot of them.

What I wish was different

Maybe that the freshmen need a little more help? A lot of them were on top of their things so I felt a little unneeded? Welcomed but not always necessary.

Advice

You become one of the people the freshman come to trust so being available if you can is good since you never know when you might be needed at the spur of the moment.

Summer Faculty Research Assistant

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved the impact on the community my research had. I also loved working with other dedicated psychology students and faculty.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gone somewhere outside of Appleton and Wisconsin. I also wish they would have advertised that researchers were receiving free housing.

Advice

Approach research with 100% enthusiasm and do not be discouraged when things do not work out the way you think they will. Eventually they will work out and if you do not like what you are doing, you have learned what you do not want to do with the rest of your life. It was only a summer and not years spent doing something you do not like.

Student Researcher

June - August 2018 • Appleton, WI

What I liked

I loved having a one-on-one collaboration with my professor/research advisor. I learned a lot and I was able to make connections with a lot of other young researchers who were also in my field.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I loved the experience.

Advice

If you're interested in doing research, be prepared to be pretty independent in solving problems as they come up (as they indefinitely will during research).
