Senior Technical Intern

January 2020 • Beavercreek, OH

What I liked

I liked how I was treated as an intern. I was treated like a real engineer and assigned to real projects. I knew what was expected of me and when. But most importantly I felt like the work I 've done has made an impact.

What I wish was different

I wish that COVID didn't happen during my work term. I feel like I would be a lot closer to my team if it didn't happen. Even though we had remote "water cooler" meetings it's just not the same. In addition due to the nature of working at a defense contractor, working remote brought everything to an almost complete standstill.

Advice

Get to know the people you're working with. You don't have to be friends but it will make everything a lot more enjoyable. You don't have to just go to work and not talk to them outside of it. Also, especially with the inflation rate right now, make sure you're getting a fair wage.

Technical Intern

January 2022 • Beavercreek, OH

What I liked

The office has a very friendly environment. My coworkers are both approachable and helpful when I have questions about things. There were a few in building events or times the engineers went out to lunch together. The flexible hours are also nice.

What I wish was different

While I was placed on some projects, I often spent time waiting. In more than one case I was waiting for hardware availability to be able to test something. While this is generally inevitable in some cases, it’s still frustrating. I also spent much of my time working solo on things. I think I would prefer to feel more directly part of a team for the projects I was working on. I also think I would be more productive in that setting.

Advice

Ask your coworkers for help. It’s often better to shoot someone a message and have something resolved in 5 minutes than to spend hours trying to figure it out yourself. That said be aware that everyone likely has their attention split between multiple tasks and won’t always get back to you right away. It is a good idea to have at least two of your objectives that you can actively work towards at the same time so that you can switch focus and still be productive while waiting to tag up.

Intern - Software Engineering

January 2022 • Beavercreek, OH

What I liked

The office has a very friendly environment. Even though I wasn't working directly with people they still seemed approachable. The people around me seemed interested in helping be learn and get running as a competent team member. The conversations in the break room also make it seem like a place where coworkers are also friends. The flexible hours are also nice.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have gotten onto a project sooner. This likely had much to do with the pandemic limiting how much people could work in person. My ability to work on certain projects was also limited by my lack of security clearance while starting. The delay in my application might also be related to some changes in positions happening in the company while I was starting. That said I was still learning about and working on real useful tasks.

Advice

Don't hesitate to reach out to coworkers for help. Everyone has been very understanding with the fact that most of what I'm working with is new material. They respect you enough to give you real work but don't have unrealistic expectations of what you know or can get done coming out of college. Don't worry about embarrassing yourself, just ask any questions you have and learn. I've never felt judged for not knowing something yet while working here.

What I liked

The team work and training given.

What I wish was different

More in person connections would make it easier to build a foundation

Advice

An internship opens the doors to the workforce, what to expect that is not taught or talked about in a classroom setting. College is not the job and an internship opens up pathways to a greater career.

Contracts and Compliance Intern

July 2019 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

I got the opportunity to work for a government contracted company, which is something that is rare. I learned more about business law and government contracts which I found extremely beneficial and interesting. I now understand commercial run businesses, as well as government run businesses. I also enjoyed the culture of this company, it was very relaxed and everyone went out of their way to say hello and be kind.

What I wish was different

I wish I got the opportunity to experience more with my major at this company. However, this isn't a big issue.

Advice

Realize that everything you are doing matters, and is helping someone or something. No task you perform goes unnoticed.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • West Plains, MO

What I liked

The company provides a very friendly atmosphere with employees that are always willing to work together and help each other.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have been able to work for a longer period of time at this company. After three months during the summer, I felt like was getting to know the company and the people I worked with well and would have liked to continue this work for a few more months.

Advice

At this job, you get thrown into the work right away. My advice is to not be afraid to ask questions and to ask for help. There is no one that is going to turn you away if you ask and it make the work much easier and more manageable if you get input from coworkers.
