What I liked

This job experience helped me solidify my career interest. I was able to mentor students who came from a similar upbringing as me and helped them take the steps to get into college. I want a career where I can take what I learned about being first gen and make the college application process easier for other first gen college applicants.

What I wish was different

This position was remote due to covid. I would have love to do this job in person, but that was out of everyone's control.

Advice

Once piece of advice I would share is to be open-minded and take the time to adjust your approach every student you mentor in a different way.

SAT Math Tutor

What I liked

I loved how I met with the same group of about 6-8 students every week for 10 weeks for 3 hours. This was an effective schedule because the first two hours was strictly dedicated to doing out math problems and explain concepts. Then the last hour was dedicated to learning about some new aspect to the complicated college application process. I truly believe that I helped boost these high-schoolers confidence and competence levels.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more guidance from the site directors to suggest more effective ways for students to retain the information because they were previously tutors and should know what works and what doesn't. This was my first time ever teaching math to a group of students, so sometimes I wasn't sure what the most effective way to explain a complicated concept.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience would be to make sure that you create a judgement-free zone, so students feel comfortable to ask any questions that arise. Especially with math, many students find it very hard and often times will resist learning just because they are not interested in the topic. Constantly reminding them the importance of what they are learning and how applicable it is to not only the SAT, but future math courses in college.

My favorite part of being a coach was being a mentor to students. I was able to enhance my public speaking skills, a task that has always a real difficulty for me.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more organization within the nonprofit.

Advice

If you're thinking you're inexperienced or feeling shaky about a job opportunity, go for it. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the one of the most rewarding accomplishments.

What I liked

Let's Get Ready employees are all very passionate about helping students, so working in that enviorment is super encouraging. Site directors work together to run a specific sat prep site so you're not doing paperwork or answeing phones; you get to help high school students reach their goals. Great professional growth experience too!

What I liked

This internship was great because it was largely work-from-home based. My project manager had a fair hands-off style which allowed me the freedom to create the best program possible.

What I wish was different

There is a weekly check-in conference call that you are required to participate in and everything said could definitely be sent in an email, but other than that, I was happy with my experience.
