Less down time waiting for parts, or approval from sponsor to continue progress.

Advice

When you get one task completed or as far as possible, start working on something due at a later time to prevent a lot of work on the back end.

School Custodian

June - July 2019 • Longview, TX

What I liked

I liked receiving a paycheck. I liked moving furniture because it was a work out (however, most workers did not like moving furniture, especially the females). I liked that there was a break in addition to our lunch break. Many of my coworkers were pleasant to be around.

What I wish was different

I wish our boss would have allowed us to use earbuds during work hours. I wish the boss and team leads would get more organized. That way the men (or very strong women, let's not be sexist) could be set to do the heavier work such as moving furniture. Also, some of my coworkers who are growing old were ordered to do jobs in ways that would likely damage the spine of even a young man. When asking the boss if they could use available machinery instead and spare their backs, permission was denied. I just would like those in charge to be considerate of the older workers. Also, many of the custodial workers (including myself) were Hispanic. Apparently the boss set a rule that we could not speak to each other in Spanish. For communication over radio that is a legitimate order, however, it does not seem right to me that Spanish was not allowed for other inter-worker chit-chatter.

Advice

Everyone will tell you to do things a different way. The team lead, however, knows more about what is going on than anyone else, so listen to her/him, and always be respectful to the main boss.
