Program Manager Intern

May - August 2021 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I really liked the impact that my project had! To be able to have the freedom to become an expert on my specific product and do what I wanted with it was a very unique experience.

What I wish was different

I wish Microsoft had done a better job establishing a sense of community for interns remotely. I did not get to interact with others my age unless I actively sought out chats with them.

Advice

Never give up! No matter what stage of the project you’re in, no matter how far along your internship is, it is never safe to assume that you won’t get a return offer. Do your best, and leave behind no regrets!

What I liked

My mentors and managers were very supportive and were willing to help us when we were struggling. My intern team I was working with was also very helpful and I had a good time working with them.

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person because it was hard to meet people if I didn't reach out to people myself. I think the experience in the office would have felt different too.

Advice

Be confident in your abilities and know that you are there because the interviewers saw potential in you. It may seem like everyone knows what they are doing and you are the only one that feels lost, but I learned that everyone feels the same way.

What I liked

Intern events Relocation allowance Perks

What I wish was different

I spoke to more interns, other employees in my org. I had a more exciting project.

Advice

Do not struggle for too long. Try to figure things out yourself but do not become stuck. Have fun with the experience. I got too bogged down with my project that I hardly enjoyed other aspects of the internship.

Program Manager Intern

May - August 2021 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

There was a ton of flexibility and ownership built into the internship. From the beginning, I was asked about my preferences and skillsets to shape my primary intern projects. Although it did take some time to become familiar with the terminology and processes on my own, I appreciated the ownership entrusted to me on my work. I really enjoyed the various communities we were plugged into right away as interns, and these opportunities were essential to getting to know the team members of my org, other interns through my cohort, co-workers from ERGs that spearheaded company-wide initiatives. Despite working from home over the summer, I had people to talk to everyday and found side projects to join in on or pick up.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

Great culture and work environment with amazing managers and leadership. Projects were interesting and people were always willing to help. Best internship experience I’ve had.

What I wish was different

My internship was remote so it was a bit more difficult to connect with my coworkers outside of my mentor and manager.

Advice

Reach out to employees outside of your work group and learn/ask questions about what they're doing. Get involved in Employee Resource Groups (they have them for Women, LGBTQ+, Asians, etc.) and take advantage of all the fun events they hold over the summer to meet people and build your network!!
