Oshkosh Defense

Financial Compliance Intern

June 2021 • Oshkosh, WI

What I liked

Really enjoy the company culture and the organization as a whole. Good products made for good people. All of the employees that I've met at my time at the company have been kind and have helped me grow professionally.

What I wish was different

I wish that COVID wasn't as much of a factor. A ton of team members work from home due to the pandemic, and I wish that this sometimes weren't the case.

Advice

Always ask questions and strive to learn something new each day. If you're ever unsure, just ASK. Everyone at the company wants to see you succeed. They are always there to help.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2021 • Oshkosh, WI

What I liked

Their internship program is amazing. Truly an entry level experience in getting started in the engineering industry making many new connections and friends along the way since they provide relocation benefits. Everyone pushes you and treats you like you are an engineer working in your specific team with real technology, guidelines, and consequences if goals are not met. I was in charge of developing prototype armor for the JLTV, so I quickly learned the entire development, prototyping, and manufacturing process of creating a brand new product to be used across many vehicles.

What I wish was different

Some training in the basics of armor systems and the sheer scope of its role in protecting the occupants would have helped in my development of the prototype armor.

Advice

Keep an open mind on completing project goals and ask a lot of questions without being too overbearing on your manager.

Aftermarket Purchasing Intern

January 2018 - August 2019 • Oshkosh, WI

What I liked

Oshkosh Defense is a great company to work for. They give you meaningful work and allow you to become a part of the team. I think my favorite part about the experience is that the work was challenging and I was able to help make improvements to the processes they had. Also, they had summer intern events and development workshops throughout the year. These were always fun and helped you network and grow professionally.

Advice

My advice to any student looking for or starting an internship would be to put yourself out there. Sign up for and try as many things that you can. This is a time for you to learn what you like and don't like, so when you graduate you know what you are looking for. Every opportunity you get involved with is a learning and networking opportunity.

What I liked

Working with purchasing and engineering to develop cost estimates.

What I wish was different

Working more with people, I sat at a computer most days and had very little in person interaction with people.
