Palomar Health

Pathmaker Intern

March 2020 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

I enjoy the hands on experience working with patients and building up my bed side manner.

What I wish was different

I wish reaching out to nurses or doctors was easier and more convenient.

Advice

Be open to learning new things and don't be afraid to ask for help or more information on anything that interests you or things you don't know.

Pathmaker Intern

January 2020 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

I love the hands-on interaction that I receive with patients of diverse backgrounds, it really allows me to learn how to communicate with people outside of my own culture and learn more about the importance of social and cultural competence. I also love being able to work so closely with nurses, TeleTechs, and other healthcare providers.

What I wish was different

This is something that I cannot change but of course, I wish the pandemic was not a problem so that there are fewer limitations on my position as an intern.

Advice

It's an amazing experience that allows students to really grasp a deeper understanding of what it is like to work in the healthcare/medical field. If someone is interested in applying to the internship, take it seriously because it is extremely competitive and you are not guaranteed a spot.

Palomar Hospital Intern

August 2017 - April 2018 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

I liked how I got to interact with patients and hospital staff. It was a great experience to be around the setting that I want to eventually have a career in. I got to see some really awesome procedures and help the CNA's attend to patients.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more times of need, I felt a lot of the 4 hour shift I was there, it was mostly just me walking around the hospital floor and at times I could talk to nurses but I didn't want to bug them my whole shift.

Advice

Be as involved as you can because that is what makes this experience so cool. Talk to nurses to get a better understanding of each department.

Pathmaker Intern

September 2017 • Escondido, CA

What I liked

Incredible hands-on direct patient care experience, ability to see where your strengths fit into the health care team, exposure to patients and health care professionals.

What I wish was different

Number of guaranteed shifts (it’s one four hour shift a week, but I wish they were longer).

Advice

Take on as many shifts as you can!
