I loved working with elementary students providing a fun environment for summer school-age care. The kids always have such fun energies that make encouraging them easy. I love being able to show students crafts and help instill a love of art and science at an early age.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to work there during the school year as well. However, they are based in my hometown, so I only get to work there on semester breaks.
Advice
Being a substitute Activity Assistant has taught me the value of flexibility and critical thinking. I would often have to jump into situations where I didn't know the kids or school but was expected to interact with the students as if I did. I also became very good at memorizing names quickly. I would advise learning those skills because they will serve you well in future experiences. Also, always keep a positive attitude. It can really make a difference in other people's lives when they have a positive influence.
