Penn State Hershey Summer Undergraduate Research Intern

May - August 2018 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the opportunities to learn new skills during my internship. Most days I had a general schedule of different experiments I was supposed to run, but if there was a technique that I was really interested in learning, there were always people who were willing to let me watch them and ask questions. I also loved the warm teaching environment at Penn State Hershey. My supervisor and other grad students I worked with never made me feel bad for not knowing something, and were always happy to explain something to me until I understood it.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed a bit longer so that I would have had more time to do research and experiments for my final project. Other than that, there really isn't anything else that I wish had been different.

Advice

My biggest piece of advice is to never be afraid to put yourself out there and try new opportunities when they are available. This can apply to job searching, or interactions with co-workers and supervisors at your job/internship. Even if you are shy/unsure of yourself, always try to act more confident than you feel. You will be happy that you were proactive and took initiate, and you'll be surprised at the great things that might come your way!

Undergraduate Research Intern

May - August 2017 • Hershey, PA

What I liked

I liked that I was matched up with a mentor in a department that matched my interests and future career plans. I also like that I was given an independent research project to complete on my own, with a some guidance from my mentor. Having an independent project to focus on was a unique experience that prepped me for the next step in my career path (graduate school). The program also offered weekly seminars that helped expand our professional skills, which was a great addition to the internship program.

What I wish was different

I really enjoyed this internship, so the only change I would make would be to make the internship longer!

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity the internship offers outside of your own research. These will make your experience better!
