What I liked
I worked with at-risk residential youth, and I liked getting to know the residents the most. I made it my duty to try to help them the best I could.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had more control over certain things, but I understand that in my position, that was hard to do.

Psychiatric Technician
May 2018 - September 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI
What I liked
The unparalleled teamwork and communication between all nursing disciplines was like nothing I've ever experienced before. Everyone worked toward to the single goal of high quality patient centered care and the results were evident among the patients.

Advice
If I could share one of the greatest pieces of advice I received within my first few shifts it was this: Remember that no matter how stressed and scared you are, the patient is experiencing the situation 10x worse, and they need you to be calm, encouraging, patient, loving, and meet them where they are in that moment and then move forward with treatment.

What I liked
I liked being around patients who were struggling with mental health issues because that’s what I had dedicated my entire college education to.
What I wish was different
My paychecks didn’t cover my cost of living, even though I was working very hard every day at my job, taking care of patients.
Advice

Psychiatric Technician
June 2017 • Grand Rapids, MI
What I liked
I love working in healthcare and with a healthcare team. In this job you get to provide direct patient care and gain incredible experience. This job, though, I loved for more than the paycheck and experience. I get to help people in their darkest moments, learn their stories and be a part of their treatment and recovery team.
What I wish was different
Some programs within Pine Rest need updating.
Advice
Even though you are in this job to help other people you cannot neglect your own health and emotions. This job is extremely taxing on your emotions. Make sure you seek help and assistance if you need it, talk about your experience, debrief hard days and be thankful for the good ones.
