Plante Moran

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I really liked how willing the people were to help me along my journey and how genuine everybody was.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to visit more client sites. Unfortunately, it was a very slow month and a lot of my clients fell through.

Advice

One thing I talked about in my exit interview was being honest with myself and others. I don't believe that audit was my thing, but I did love the company, people, and opportunities. If you are honest about those things it will only help your network/references in the long run. Even if it isn't the best place for you long-term, if you leave a good impression and make good connections, the people will help to get you there.

International Tax Accounting

What I liked

The culture is incredible, the people working there want to see you succeed.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take time to learn how to do different aspects of tax (or other job roles) to see which role you prefer most. Plante Moran was incredibly supportive in letting both myself and my peers explore different types of career paths.

What I liked

I loved how open and welcoming they were when I first started. They also were more than happy to help answer any and every question I may of had without me feeling dumb for asking.

What I wish was different

Honestly I really liked my internship. The people were great to work with and super welcoming.

Advice

I would say that you can never be to early in looking at internships. a couple months prior to when you want to take an internship is too late.

Tax Accountant Intern

June - August 2023 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I really liked all of the people I got to work with. Everyone was very kind when interacting and always helpful. Whenever I had a question about anything, I was able to ask it and get good and real answer without feeling any judgement. During the internship I learned a lot and it was great environment to grow and expand my knowledge. The internship was also set up in a way where I always had something to work on and if I asked for work, I would immediately get put on a project so I was never bored/not doing anything. With this, since it was a summer tax internship and not during busy season, the work never felt super stressful as well.

What I wish was different

Advice

One piece of advise I would give would be to always ask questions when you have them. You are coming in with little to no knowledge of how to do what you are doing so you will be confused a lot. Asking questions when you feel stuck is the best way to learn and grow on the job. Asking questions is also a good way to spend time with staff, seniors, and managers, and by just observing their processes and how they problem solve is a great way to learn and understand what you are doing.

Winter Tax Intern

January - April 2023 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Plante Moran has an amazing culture and was super supporting! The teams were setup so you can succeed and do your best. Very easy and able to check in with the team and adjust things accordingly. I was able to balance school and interning very well due to the support and flexibility! The work was engaging and I was able to see a variety of work and expand my horizons. The staff were amazing and showed me how great one of the largest accounting firms really is!

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish was different was if I was able to do less credits. I did 12 credit hours while interning. This is where Plante Moran demonstrated massive amounts of flexibility. But mentally, I would have enjoyed not having to think about school as much as I had to. In all honesty though, it taught me balance more than anything so I am still grateful.

Advice

Be prepared to learn! Not only about tax, but about yourself, how you work, what you like, and who you are in the work place! This was a huge experience and opportunity to grow, but also much more than just technical tax but about you as a person. The more prepared you are to come to work and embrace the experience the more you will get out of the internship!

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

From the very start, everyone was very open for any questions and was very nice to talk to. Everyone from all levels in the company are there for you to succeed no matter what it is and that was very nice to have. You get so many client experiences in the field. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend!

What I wish was different

I didn't receive too much feedback from my work and I would've loved to hear what I need to work on and things of that nature.

Advice

Always say yes to any experience you get offered and don't be afraid to reach out to someone who you have never met before.

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I really enjoyed my internship this summer. I learned a lot through actual client work and met a lot of professionals that shared great advice. It was great working in teams and the staff are incredibly helpful. Everyone is flexible, making it possible to work in the office or from home. It is also a great experience to visit client sites and see what other offices are like. The firm made sure that there are opportunities for interns to meet other interns and staff outside of their engagement team. The coffee chats and intern events were all great ways to network with professionals in public accounting.

What I wish was different

I mainly worked on EBPs during my internship due to the summer being a slow season for public accounting. I'm sure interns would get better exposure to actual corporate audits if they interned during the winter busy season time. I was still able to do one open balance sheet and one corporate audit, but I have not found the industry I would like to be in as EBPs are the same across industries.

Advice

A piece of advice would be to find time to network. I know many interns had a lot of down time, so it was relatively easy for them to set up coffee chats. I personally had almost no down time during this internship, so I learned that I had to speak up and communicate with the engagement team that I need to go to my coffee chats. You get to learn a lot about the profession and people's experiences through these chats, so it's definitely something an intern should do.

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

My experience at Plante this summer has been wonderful! The staff at the Ann Arbor office (and all other offices) have been so welcoming and they are always willing to help and support the interns. Working directly with clients has been a great learning experience. I also enjoy the flexibility of working from home, from the office, or at a client site, depending on what work needs to be done. The offices coordinate a lot of activities outside of work, allowing you to network and bond with other staff (and have fun)!

What I wish was different

Advice

If you want to try something new, talk to your buddy/partner! They are super accommodating and want you to explore new opportunities and enjoy the work you do.

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to go out and meet clients, in person, and gain experience in the accounting world. The people around the office were very helpful and friendly, which made my experience amazing. During a summer audit internship, you can gain a wide variety of knowledge and be able to poke around different parts of auditing like EBPs and internal audits. Also, the company planned many events and activities to help everyone meet each other, bond, and demonstrate their high class culture. I'm super grateful for the experience and highly recommend a place like Plante Moran.

What I wish was different

Not much i would add, but maybe some more in person shadowing opportunities.

Advice

Soak in all the information and never be afraid to ask questions.

RAAS Consultant Intern

June - August 2023 • Denver, CO

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Plante. Everyone on my team was incredibly welcoming and great to draw knowledge from. The variety of work that I was placed on really helped to guide my decision regarding what type of work I'd like to do going forward. The firm does a great job of allowing interns to explore all of the options available to them. Additionally, there were many intern events and other internal networking opportunities throughout the entirety of the summer.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the resources available to you, and realize that you have more say than you'd think with regard to the type of work you'd like to do. Additionally, if any other service lines interest you then be sure to express an interest as you'll almost certainly be given the chance to set up shadows/meetings with members from other teams.

Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I had a great experience at Plante Moran! The company really cares about their interns. They provide each with a buddy and team partner who you are able to connect with regularly, which allowed me to more easily get a feel for the office culture and job responsibilities. You are working on real clients and doing real work. Between events during the work day, after work, and a 2-day intern summit, they also make sure you are having a lot of fun and meeting a majority of the people in the office. This was my first internship (summer after sophomore year in a 4-year 150 credit program) and I absolutely recommend for anyone looking to get a feel for public accounting early on. I appreciate that they only require introductory level accounting classes and supplement with on-the-job training. It is an opportunity that's hard to come by nowadays and was an excellent learning experience for me.

What I wish was different

This is not necessarily a problem with the company (rather with choosing to do a summer over a winter internship), but I wish I had more client work to fill my days.

Advice

Show interest in and/or interview with this firm earlier than you think you need to, especially if you are interested in this position for one of your first internships. Spots seem to go quickly depending on the office. While in the internship, make sure you are taking the initiative to meet people. The company sets you up with people for coffee chats, but I would recommend doing even more. It's the best way to figure out if you could see yourself at the firm.

What I liked

I loved the culture at PM. The people are amazing and so welcoming to interns. The other interns in my start group became close friends and will continue to be my friends even after the internship is over and we all start back at our schools. The experience on the job has been so beneficial and I have learned so much.

Tax Intern

June - August 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Plante Moran is an amazing, welcoming place. At no point did I feel left out or made to feel like I wasn't cut out or smart enough. Anytime I had questions, I could go to anyone whether they were on my team or in my department. Everyone is always very excited to meet with the interns and it was very comforting

What I wish was different

I really just wish it was longer! I was so sad when it ended.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be yourself. It's exhausting to have to pretend to be someone you're not, and at Plante your individuality is celebrated! If you are the kid that has a GIF for every situation, continue to be that person! If you are known for bright colors or a trademark laugh, don't stifle it!

management consulting business valuation intern

June - August 2021 • Southfield, MI

What I liked

I liked the culture and environment. I also liked the flexible time off plan they had. I liked the work I was doing because it was project based and wasn't super stressful because you would pick up a project then wait for the client to get back and while waiting you'd work on another project so it wasn't too fast paced, but was nice to pay attention to detail.

What I wish was different

I wished I would've gotten more shadowing experience because it being virtual it was hard to always know what to do so in those times where I didn't have much to do I wish someone would've taken me under their belt and let me watch what their day looks like as a full day maybe. I also wish people would have given me more work because everyday I was asking for work from multiple people and no one really had a ton for me to do.

Advice

Make the most of it as much as you can and always ask questions. You are allowed to not know in an experience like this so use that to your advantage to learn as much as you can.

June - August 2021 • Macomb Township, MI

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture of the firm. Everyone was very nice and helpful. I really felt like a member of the PM team!

What I wish was different

The summer is not a very busy time for auditing, so I worked on fewer projects with less variety than I would have liked.

Advice

I would suggest doing a winter internship if you can because there will be many more opportunities to learn. However, an intern should expect to work more than 40 hours during a winter internship.
