What I liked

I enjoyed traveling around the island being able to work for a good cause and benefit the local communities. I was able to meet many people from all walks of life and share meaningful experiences.

What I wish was different

Working with PPM was generally a great experience. The staff is very caring and understanding and together we were able to handle emerging circumstances very well. I don't think I would have changed anything about my experience working with this organization or the way the work is laid out.

Advice

I would advice to prepare spiritually. It is a Christ centered organization and the experience requires you to be emotionally well and nourished in faith.

What I wish was different

I wish I had better prepared my mindset before starting the job, but hindsight is always 20/20.

Advice

Write down things you learn as you go and try to keep them all in one place. Read them in the middle, immediately after, and a few months following the summer.

What I liked

I loved getting to work with people from all around the world, practice my Spanish, be challenged to take on difficult and scary roles, learn about the culture, and work to serve others and love them for Christ.

What I wish was different

I wish it were longer, but also that staff could have a little bit more time of recuperation and rest. Things were a little unorganized this summer because we became short-staffed, but it is not usually like that.

Advice

Research the culture and history of the places you will be serving and practice the language. Be intentional about getting to know people, you are with the other staff constantly and you only have a week with the groups coming in, so make the most of it. Even if it means getting up earlier, make sure you have time by yourself every day to spend reading scripture and praying, there's no way to get through these long days apart from God, you need to be filled by Him. Go with the flow, plans can change on the fly- learn to be okay with improvising and leading, even when you don't fully know the answers yourself. Be vulnerable, people trust you more as a leader when they see you being honest and open about things.

What I liked

I liked that I got to work with people in my favorite city and tell others bout Jesus.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to spend more time in Pittsburgh and we could have worked with other inner-city ministries.

Advice

Get to know people around you. Whether you pass them in the dining hall or on the street, this is your community and you never know how much you can impact someone's life by interacting with them. This is exactly what our mission groups did in Pittsburgh.
