Pro Metal Works, Inc

Engineering Co-op

May - August 2023 • DeForest, WI

What I liked

Pro Metal was very welcoming, helpful, and determined. The entire staff is kind to everyone and treats each other as family. Pro Metal has high standards and it is easy to associate it with how hard everyone works. As an intern I learned more than I could have ever hoped for. I learned how to program, setup, and operate multiple different machines. I got to see how the entire business works, from engineering aspects of how to create fiber laser programs to be used in the shop. Then the entire manufacturing process it goes through to create the final part. From press brakes, pemming, welding, deburring, etc... One project in particular I got to work on was using Solid Works to create new steps for their company truck. I took measurements on the old rusted steps, created the 3D model, converted it into the fiber laser software, and manufactured it. This internship has been a great experience and I could not be more thankful for my opportunity to work here.

What I wish was different

I truly have no complaints about Pro Metal Works. A few things I wish have had been different would be working on bigger projects with the engineering team. I got to do many smaller projects, however, I mostly worked on them by myself. I wish I was able to work on a bigger tasks that would require working with an entire team. I also wish I got to sleep in later than our start time of 6:30! It was definitely a warm welcome to the real world.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to be flexible. There is going to be times when the shop is slower and there is not as much work in a certain department. Be flexible so you can be moved around and help out where help is needed. Pro Metal Works is a job shop so you never really know what you will be doing each week.
