Project Oceanology

Day Camp Intern

June - August 2022 • Groton, CT

What I liked

I appreciated how the organization was run. I liked the people who worked there. My role was clear to me but I also got the freedom to put my own passions into my job. I had one lesson a week to lead-teach. Even though I didn't have a background in marine science, I was encouraged to bring what I had to the table. I often would do some library research and then come up with a basic lesson. One example of a lesson where I intigrated my background in the arts: I did a coral reef presentation and then had the kids build their own "coral reefs" out of dried pasta, hot glue, and paint. It was a great success!

What I wish was different

Especially during my early days in the job, I could have used a little more connection with leadership. They were present but super busy and I wanted to receive a little more information. By mid summer, I felt that we figured out the communication better.

Advice

The main qualities I would say the internship role requires is a passion for working with kids, a positive attitude, and an interest in spending a lot of time outside/on the ocean. A backround in marine science and/or engineering would also be useful, but (I would say) not necessary! I would advise people to just take the dive and apply! I especially reccomend applying through College Corps. It seems like it was pretty competitive to get an intern position at Project O last summer, but because I applied through College Corps, I was able to get the position.
