Protect Our Wildlife VT

Newsletter Intern

April - August 2020 • South Burlington, VT

What I liked

I enjoyed the research I had to do as well as the amount of advising and mentoring I received from my coordinator, Brenna. It was challenging, meaningful, and enjoyable, and I loved being able to reach out and make connections within the animal advocacy world. I also had my newsletter published in a few newspapers which felt amazing!

What I wish was different

It would have been great to have more hours and to work in person, but sadly COVID restrictions changed that. Otherwise, it was a truly great experience and all I wish is that I had had more time to work on other projects.

Advice

Don't be afraid if you don't know anything about the topic you're researching! My project revolved around trying to ban beaver trapping in Vermont and I knew absolutely nothing about it, but Brenna provided me with excellent resources and contacts and now I'm a bonafide beaver trapping expert. Also, go into this if you have a real interest in animal advocacy and writing. If you don't care for it, you're not going to enjoy the work you have to put in or the slight backlash you'll receive from people who disagree with your work.
