Student Researcher

What I liked

What I wish was different

Advice

As a student, establishing connections is extremely important. I started doing research with Dr. Lau on the Mountain Valley Pipeline during my spring semester freshman year. I participated in collecting macroinvertebrate, water chemistry and physical habitat samples along several of the streams that the pipeline is projected to cross, in order to measure stream quality. We've been taking these samples back to the lab to analyze using microscopes and programs such as R Studio. This past summer, she received a grant that allowed her to pay her student researchers for their work. I am grateful to have gotten involved in research with Dr. Lau, for she has provided me with an opportunity that helps me financially and academically. I urge every student to get involved not only with your professors, but in research early on. Not because of the money, but because of the experience that you will be able to carry with you beyond graduation.

Governor's School Counselor

June - July 2019 • Radford, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the positive work environment and having the opportunity to work with talented teenagers. Watching the students grow was a wonderful experience. It was, hands-down, the most rewarding and best work that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing and I would do it all over again any day.

What I wish was different

I would have liked one more night off during the month. We were only allocated one night off during the 5 weeks that we worked, but I understand that it is the nature of the job of being there to care for the students 24/7 to ensure their safety while away from home.

Advice

While it was one of the best experiences that I, personally have had, it is a lot of work. You never get to put yourself first and it is all about the students. You sacrifice a good chunk of your summer to do it, and you are going to be tired for about a month. But personally, I love kids and I was willing to give my 100% to insure that they were safe and had everything they needed. There is also a lot of teamwork involved. It is difficult to make it through the month without leaning on fellow counselors for support and backup. So make sure you are able to work efficiently with others.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2019 • Radford, VA

What I liked

I love every bit of being a research assistant. My research deals with ecology and coding models that represent reality. This can be used to predict future ecosystem changes due to external or internal factors. By using models like this, we can better understand the world around us and help protect it. I have met amazing people around Virginia in my short time doing this. I have assisted others in their research progress and will be ready to publish our work within a short time. Being a published scientist this young is such an amazing opportunity and a huge step towards a successful career.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have started something like this my Junior year at Radford.

Advice

If you have the opportunity to do research on campus, do it! It's nothing but a positive experience and will do wonders in shaping you into the person you need to be after graduation.

Summer Research Fellow

May - August 2018 • Radford, VA

What I liked

I really enjoyed delving into my research project and I was able to explore my passion. From this experience I know for sure that I want to go to graduate school.

What I wish was different

I would have preferred that the the fellowship would of included the ability to stay in Radford because I did not have an off campus apartment. That did affect my project because my mentor was not accessible physically.

Advice

Definitely communicate with your research mentor/adviser. Also, have a research plan but know that it is okay to be flexible with your schedule/plan.
