REI

Retail Salesperson

June - August 2023 • Maple Grove, MN

What I liked

Super chill work environment and everyone, including customers, are extremely patient and willing to work with you to resolve any issues that may come up.

What I wish was different

Better pay for a company that emphasizes the importance of work/life balance.

Advice

Be open to advice from people who have held this position for longer than you, and just be yourself.

Frontline

August 2021 • Santa Cruz, CA

What I liked

I like the community that REI creates-- being inclusive and non judgmental when you lack experience in a certain field, promoting paid community volunteer hours, paid outside time, etc. I like being able to share my personal outdoor experiences with customers and coworkers.

What I wish was different

I wish that we were not so reliant on our membership conversion rates-- they can impact the hours given based on how well you get people to join. I wish that there was more incentive and rewards based on the selling of memberships. Currently its just an occasional kudos over the radio.

Advice

My advice would be, don't take it personally when you do not get someone to sign up for the membership but at the same time do your best. I would not recommend this job to someone that is not aligned with REI's ideals and goals because it can otherwise feel draining or pointless to try to sell those ideas to other people. Work there because you WANT to work there.

What I liked

Literally everything. Inspiring co-workers, AMAZING customers, awesome company values. I work in the camping department and I love hearing all of the cool trips that people are taking. I have outfitted all kinds of people, from taking trips to Antarctica to camping in the backyard with your children. It is absolutely one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever worked. Plus I'm going to be a teacher so I'm sure I will need a part-time job so I never have to quit!

What I wish was different

If I made more money that would be cool but honestly, that is about it.

Advice
