Restorative Justice Louisville

About Restorative Justice Louisville

Background:
Restorative Justice Louisville is an alternative opportunity to the criminal justice system for juveniles. Differing from the criminal justice system, Restorative Justice Louisville uses the Family Group Conference Model. The conferences are decision-making meetings led by trained facilitators involving face-to-face contact for victims, offenders, and support systems from both sides.

A little bit about the process:
Cases are referred to Restorative Justice Louisville through Court, or the Court Designated Workers office. Participation in this process is completely voluntary for both parties; victims and offenders. Offenders must be willing to accept responsibility for their actions and the harm caused. The victims must be willing to meet with the offender and their support system to discuss the impact the incident has made on their life and what needs to be done to repair the harm. This facilitated process is centered on making things right for all parties involved while enabling creative solutions not used within the traditional justice system.

How to get involved:
Facilitators are required to complete a 4-day training. Training's are held in August and April. The purpose of the 4-day training is to help facilitators become competent in the goals of Restorative Justice Louisville, and practice real-world conference experiences. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator, please contact Tia Pank at tiapank@rjlou.org.
