SAMBICA

Ropes Course Facilitator

June - August 2023 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I loved that Sambica is an environment where everyone is seeking to experience God's love more fully and to share His goodness with others! The staff, especially the leadership team, were so encouraging and I always felt uplifted when I spent time at camp. I had so much fun working on the ropes course and I loved that I got to be in nature, I could appreciate the beauty of God's creation, and I was able to invite kids to challenge themselves and trust God when they tried something outside of their comfort zone.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change the responsibilities or daily routine of a ropes course facilitator- I only wish I had worked more weeks at camp! If I had worked more weeks at camp, I could've better invested in my team members and connected with more campers about their faiths.

Advice

I would recommend approaching each day as a gift from God to experience His grace and an opportunity to do the work that lies ahead of you. If you believe God placed you in your role for a reason and you are an important member of Sambica's staff, you can have confidence that what you're working on truly matters and makes a difference in the lives of those around you. With this perspective, you can work hard and deeply invest in your role, be joyful and excited about the work you're doing, and share that joy with those around you; work is something we can celebrate and do diligently for the Lord's glory!

What I liked

I loved the flexibility I had in my schedule! Staff and campers are also so amazing. It was a wonderful learning experience to grow my camera skills as well and engage with campers about Christ. I loved how much fun it was to be able to capture all of these wonderful moments of campers and staff having a blast serving Jesus.

What I wish was different

I do think I wish for anything to have been different. My boss and my co-workers all poured life into my soul from the scripture and loved me in a way on a community of believers could. My boss was so encouraging and honest in helping me develop my skills. Not to mention it was so much fun! I wouldn't go back and change anything. There isn't any kind of work environment better than this one.

Advice

I actually have a few pieces of advice! 1. Wear comfortable shoes!! It is a lot of walking around, going on all these adventures looking for moments. 2. Don't be afraid to take a breather if you need it. For me, I would work from that morning till late that afternoon working because there was always something to do. Take a break or a little nap when you can so you don't get too tired! 3. Plan out a schedule. There are a bunch of activities all going on at once, so based on all the photos you need to get for the week, plan out which ones you need for the day so you don't lose your marbles wandering around. 4. Have fun! Stop and hang out with campers, I found that this is when I found the best photos! Kids and staff in their natural habitat. Talk with them, ask questions, engage with them, pray for them, etc.

What I liked

I loved being able to work with kids every week and teach them about Jesus. I also enjoyed being on a lake all summer.

What I wish was different

I wish I had brought a car with me so that I could go out on weekends instead of waiting on someone who felt like going out.

Advice

It is so meaningful and worth-while. Caring for kids can get tiring, but there are so many emotional rewards in store. This was honestly the best summer I have ever had.
