Schneps Media

Digital Designer Intern

May - August 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

Amazing staff and engaging projects! Dylan and Bobby in particular were super helpful with the internship program. I was never lost or confused about what I was assigned or working on next. Was able to create a lot of great work for both Schneps and my portfolio.

What I wish was different

Would have been beneficial to have one or two other digital designers to work with, mainly for exchanging ideas, getting more constructive feedback, etc.

Media Journalist

May - August 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being treated more like a writer than like an intern. Too many internship stories end with an individual not getting a lot of professional experience and they were more just errand boys. That was not the case with Schneps. They trusted us interns like they trusted their staff and journalists. We were able to freely pitch what we wanted and follow stories we wanted to report on. We were respected like journalists, not just interns.

What I wish was different

Really my only critique is that it wasn't paid. It had to be this way so we could receive school credit, but it still would've been nice.

Advice

Be proactive! It's a great opportunity for writers to get bylines and inside experience at a successful, well-run paper. The editors are very helpful and there are plenty of opportunities to learn from some of the best in the game. You are treated like a staff writer, so pitch the stories you want and they will help you work out how you should go about it.

Creative Director & Media Journalist Intern

January - May 2024 • Uniondale, NY

What I liked

I liked how open the team was to new ideas and the wide variety of opportunities available. I was able to pitch ideas, edit video packages for socials, write articles and shoot content.

What I wish was different

I wish that the internship lasted longer and I had the chance to work with more of the other interns.

Advice

Be open to new ideas, beats and topics that you wouldn't necessarily cover! One story can open up more opportunities down the line.

Sports Creative Journalist

May - August 2024 • New York, NY

What I liked

Interning at Schneps Media has been an amazing experience. The opportunity to attend so many different New York sporting events has been truly special, such as going to a Mets or Giants game as a press member. The group of interns and supervisors who I worked with were all amazing. They helped better my writing, editing and interviewing skills throughout the internship. I received an abundance of feedback and constantly had the opportunity to collaborate with others. All of my supervisors felt like they really wanted to help me out, which was immensely appreciated. Overall, this is an amazing internship that provides unique hands-on opportunities with wonderful people. It really is an opportunity to build your journalistic skills while making connections that go beyond just journalism.

What I wish was different

Advice

Definitely should have a solid background knowledge of the New York sports teams, this will make things much easier. May be asked to do a write-up of a Mets or Yankees story, so having a familiarity with the sport helps a great deal. The stories are a blast to write if you're a big sports fan, so anyone who follows baseball, soccer, etc should have a great time. I wrote an article at one point grading the Yankee's players at the All-Star break, which was a blast for me. Pieces like that are what you can expect to write for Schneps, which I loved doing.

Brand Marketing Assistant

January - May 2024 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved working with Dylan and Bobby. The instructions were very clear and I felt I was doing valuable work that required my own insight and ideas. My opinions and feedback were valued by the team, and I appreciated them taking the time to listen to my ideas. The workload was very reasonable and instructions were very clear; I never felt like I was lost or didn't know what was going on or how to do something.

What I wish was different

I do wish there were more opportunities to work in-person, though there were a few I would have loved to been more involved with events.

Advice

It is worth the time and effort, the resources provided are excellent and you should definitely take advantage of the Schneps University videos they are very useful.

Media Journalist

February - April 2024 • New York City, NY

What I liked

This internship offered me the opportunity to really dig into journalism and improve my skills as a writer and storyteller. I was able to report on real assignments and collaborate with people in the industry who were happy to offer me their insights. The hands-on work that I did for this internship was very beneficial!

What I wish was different

A lot of this internship is independent work and reporting which is a great way to become a self-sufficient reporter but it would have been nice to have a little more collaboration with the other interns outside of weekly zoom meetings.

Advice

Take advantage of every opportunity you can! This internship will open doors and allow you to meet some really cool people if you are willing to try new things.

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to use what I have learned in my video and reporting classes at J-school and apply it to reporting in the field! It was a great learning experience having the opportunity to be on editorial team meetings each week from different local papers in our city (amNewYork and Brooklyn Paper). I was pushed out of my comfort zone to create quick turn-around pieces (writing and video) and I am leaving this experience feeling very comfortable creating publishable work on a short deadline. All the editors and reporters I worked with were super super kind!

What I wish was different

I wish I had logged my hours per week to ensure that I kept within the 10-hour weekly limit. It's hard to judge how much time you are spending on pieces especially when they are reporting in the field. That being said, the team was super flexible and accommodating with my school and work schedule.

Advice

This team is very open to pitching story ideas! I would suggest having many pitches in mind before each meeting, you can get a lot of your work published if you are prepared and plan ahead.

What I liked

Scnheps Media offered so many learning opportunities. The entire team is a close knit community and very welcoming. Everyone's opinions are heard and new ideas are always encouraged. The best part of this internship in my opinion was being able to work alongside so many exceptional people and being accepted and heard. The schneps media events are exceptional and it was mostly exciting to get the chance of meeting and interviewing so many outstanding people from New York. This opened up The entire experience was unforgettable and I'm lucky enough to have had the opportunity to work with them.

What I wish was different

One thing i wish had been different about this internship is that i wish it went on for longer. I feel like there is still so much for me to learn within Schneps media. I wish that i could have gone to work in person more to be able to create stronger connections with the people i worked with.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is don't hold back! No idea is bad. Don't be afraid to speak up and make sure to always think outside the box. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions.

What I liked

My supervisors Bobby Hankinson and Dylan Christie were amazing. They made this internship experience very enjoyable. You could tell that they care about every single intern by trying to assign us projects that are closely related to our passions and interests.

What I wish was different

I wish there were at least 1-2 mandatory days a week in office. Even though the position was hybrid, I was interning mostly online. We had a weekly video call meeting. I helped with 2 events but besides that, everything else was online.

Advice

Be proactive. Share what you are passionate about. Communicate.

Social Media Assistant

January - May 2024 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how closely I got to work with the directors and establish connections with them. I also loved the creative aspect of filming and editing videos, as well as having the option of going in person to the actual events.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to put in a little more input creatively and be more on the designing side, but overall I loved creating videos and editing them in different ways with various clips.

Advice

My biggest advice is definitely time management and priorities. In the beginning, I would definitely ask for a schedule or what you would be doing on a day-to-day basis. This way, you can plan where it fits in your schedule and dedicate specific time to it.

Web Development Intern

June - September 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

People in Schneps Media are so friendly and helpful. My supervisors always guide me patiently and we became good friends. I learned a lot of useful skills of web development, both front-end and back-end, and really had a great experience in Schneps.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could had more opportunities to interact with people from other teams such as HR, Editorial, Marketing teams to learn more about how teams cooperate with each other in a company.

Advice

Do not be afraid of asking for help. Interns are not expected to know everything. Asking questions will show your eagerness to learn and let your supervisor know what challenges and problems you may face. It can also bring a fresh perspective and some new ideas, which could be very helpful for your work.
