School for International Training - SIT Graduate Institute & SIT Study Abroad

VIrtual Research

July - August 2020 • Kisumu, Kenya

What I liked

I liked how SIT allowed for online tours and online interviews. This online experience was as close to real world as possible. It was an incredible experience to work for people in Kenya at different global health institutions during this global pandemic. We saw how Kenya is responding to COVID in real time.

What I wish was different

I wish that it could have been longer. It was only a 5 week experience.

Advice

I would tell anyone to make the best out of the situation. No one thought we would be here due to COVID but SIT and us global health students were able to make the best of us and turn it into a learning opportunity. As a student with prospects of working in global health I am incredibly thankful for this experience.

English Teacher

June - August 2019 • Panama City, Panama City

What I liked

I liked the cultural aspect of teaching English as a foreign language to indigenous secondary school students in Panama. This internship improved my skills in Spanish language, organizing, planning, and teamwork as I created lesson plans and interactive activities to teach students about U.S. culture.

What I wish was different

I only wish that I had started my internship sooner. That way, I would have had more time with my amazing students to improve their English and get to know them better.

Advice

If something interests you and you have the opportunity to try it, take that opportunity. At best, you will find a new interest or passion that can open doors professionally. It is also just as important to know what doesn’t interest you. But you can only know if you try.
