Animal Operations Internship

May - August 2019 • Guymon, OK

What I liked

I love learning the company as a whole. I got to work alongside managers everyday and learn the operations from an hourly wage employee to the director of the units. I had never worked on a commercial operation before, so the experience was really interesting to me.

What I wish was different

I wish the company would have had a better handle on the whole internship experience and kept us in the loop more. Their communication was not great. The intern group was often left wondering important schedule details the whole internship. A lot of the times it felt as if there was not one specific person in charge of us and we were left wondering who to ask if we had questions.

Advice

I think it is important to step outside of your comfort zone in terms of education. Internships are a great way to expand your horizons and lots of the time internships have little to do with your actual degree. I had never worked on a pig farm, let alone a commercial operation before and I took the chance. I moved 8 hours away from home for 10 weeks and spent as much time as I possibly could to learn.
