Seattle Children's Theatre

Education Administrative Intern

May - August 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Wonderful opportunities for ownership of a variety of tasks, self-determined projects, and co-teaching or observing in the classroom. The group of interns grew very close, and we have continued to collaborate in work settings ever since! The Teaching Artists are incredibly skilled and kind, and each is willing to take you under their wing.

What I wish was different

Our direct management was unsupportive and fostered a toxic environment. Communication surrounding our status as employees was unclear; I was not contracted as an employee and was specifically told I was not an employee, but fellow interns were told that "we should act like employees" anyway. The cost of living in Seattle is incredibly high, and the weekly stipend of $250 did not even come close to covering it. The work week frequently exceeded 40 hours, and though we were told to take breaks, it was often impossible due to needed coverage in the classroom or the vast amount of time-sensitive tasks that needed to be completed.

Advice

Even through an incredibly challenging experience, wonderful growth and learning can emerge!

Drama School Intern

June - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The people at SCT are so fun and supportive, and it’s an incredibly fun job. I made tons of new friends and learned a lot.

What I wish was different

The cost of living in Seattle is super high, and it was difficult to be away from loved ones for so long and so far away. It also would have been great to have been paid a little more or had housing provided.

Advice

Even something you’re truly terrified of can become a great experience with the right attitude. I was legitimately shaking with anxiety for days before I left, and though it was very hard it was a fantastic experience.
