Undergraduate Researcher

June - October 2022 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Flexible work with student and advisor directive. Able to work remotely outside of field visits.

What I wish was different

It would have been better to have discounted parking fees for work or meetings on campus.

Advice

Work on deliverable material or reports as you go, and do not wait until the end. Communication between co-researcher is also very important so you can coordinate and complete tasks.

Student Researcher

June - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

As a student researcher in the Biology department, I enjoyed applying what I learned in class to the project. Vice versa, I also enjoyed learning from the project and it fortified my understanding in later classes.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was sometimes, we had insufficient supplies in the lab and because of this, some steps in the project had to be delayed until we had more reagents and supplies.

Advice

Talk to many of the professors and see if they are doing their own research project on the side and are looking for student's help. Every research project is different, some require field work and some are only lab work, know what you prefer and stick with those professors!

Summer Resident Assistant

June - September 2018 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The job did not consume too much time. It helped me to network within my university community.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to connect with professional staff. The job did not feel transferable to future employment beyond interpersonal skills.

Advice

This job is great if you want to be in one place for a long time and need a way to be in Seattle over the summer. It is not great if you want to feel connected to the job or residents itself. It’s very self motivated and doesn’t offer a lot of structure beyond the days you’re expected to be present.
