I was given projects to own. Employees were so open to meet and talk about the company. The program was very connecting between the interns.

What I wish was different

At times there was loose guidance and the pay could have been better.

What I liked

Great team environment. Remote options, but if you came in they offered free breakfast and that was awesome. Overall, everyone was very helpful and took the work I did seriously. Couldn't have been happier with the experience.

What I wish was different

Longer time period of internship.

Advice

Work hard, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

What I liked

I liked the community that was within the intern cohort. Also, all of the associates were there to help me succeed and learn.

What I wish was different

The ability to go to the office more often.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Your manager/mentor will not judge, and it is for your benefit.

Data Science Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the group of individuals I got the opportunity to work with. I learned a lot about not only what the data science field really looks like but also how the corporate hierarchy works. They also provided us with the full internship and the equipment we needed for it.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been in-person. I found it difficult to work when I was home alone, and Securian did their best, but I also would have enjoyed being able to dress for the job and feel like I am actually in a corporate position versus just sitting at a computer all day alone in my house.

Advice

Apply for it! Securian is a wonderful company that people would be lucky to work for. I would suggest this to anyone who is at all interested in learning more about data science or data engineering or any other career path at all! They had a lot of different types of internships.

FP&A Intern

What I liked

It was a friendly environment where I never felt out of place with my team. They gave me a wide array of projects to give me a well-rounded internship within all the aspects of FP&A that I was interested in. Also, they made it easy for me to connect with fellow interns and get involved with events!

What I wish was different

Advice

I was nervous about heading up to the twin cities by myself and not knowing anyone - if anyone else is considering going out of state... DO IT! At the worst, it is 3 months; best case scenario, you love it!

What I liked

Had a lot of autonomy, got to meet so many different associates from all levels throughout the company, there were a lot of CSB/SJU alumni who I was able to meet and work with, I learned many different skills throughout many different projects, didn't have repetitive, boring, or monotonous work. The people at Securian were amazing and this program is great too!

What I wish was different

There was nothing I wish had been different besides easier parking options.

Advice

Just be yourself and be down to earth, authenticity and genuineness goes a long way.

I really enjoyed the real life experience I had. I was working on projects that my team would've done if I was there or not. I really felt like I was contributing to the team which was really fun. I learned a lot in the 2-3 months I was there.

What I liked

My team was amazing - helpful, supportive, and treated me like a full-time employee. I got to work on meaningful projects and learn so many skills that I had no previous experience with.

Don't be overwhelmed when you don't know the answer. Seek help, ask questions, and learn from everything you do!
