Working at Zankel over the summer is both relaxed and exciting!! There are a ton of events going on that make it interesting every day, but the people who you work with are friendly and relaxed

Collaborative Researcher

What I liked

I liked the autonomy of being in a biochemistry lab and learning through hands-on experience. It was also nice being on campus during the summer, with free room and board.

What I wish was different

I wish I had planned ahead more instead of going into lab as if every day were a new project.

Advice

Don't worry about getting actual results. The experience is about learning the skills that come along with working with a research team.

Chemistry Research

What I liked

It was really great to see what it's like to work full-time in a research lab doing work related to my major and possibly my future career. I loved being in a professional setting and being able to focus completely on the research I do year-round without having to worry about other class work. Saratoga is also a beautiful place to be in the summer, and the group of students living on campus during the summer was lovely.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would absolutely recommend undergrad summer research to anyone considering it! It's a great way to build your resume, strengthen your role in your academic community, and get a taste of working in your field!

Biochemistry Head Researcher

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to learn new skills that I can take with me in the future even though I will not be a biochemist. I made great connections with other people that wee in my lab and now they are great people to talk to for networking. My professor was amazing and I will now be a published author.

Chemistry Research Intern

What I liked

I was able to do biochemistry research through Skidmore's Collaborative Summer Research program, which allowed me to work with my friends and a professor I already knew while still doing important and interesting work. The lab taught me how to perform and troubleshoot experiemnts independently, which is a wonderful skill as I continue my education and after. Saratoga Springs in the summer was also such a different, exuberant town, and I believe every Skidmore student would love to experience the lively atmosphere.

What I wish was different

There's not much I would change. When it comes down to it, because research is a long ongoing process, I was sad when it was over! The benefit of researching at Skidmore is that I'm able to continue my work over the school year.

Advice

Look into any research lab at Skidmore you're interested in, even if it has nothing to do with your major! The professors who run research are always happy to bring in excited, hardworking students. Experience is not necessary, because you learn as you go, so don't let that stop you!

I got to dive deeply into the process of research, and helped put together a paper on a subject that matters a lot to me.

What I wish was different

Although the summer was very educational and I don't have any complaints with what I learnt academically, I wish that socially, the summer would have been as fulfilling.

If you're interesting in something, make your passion known! Opportunities will come your way.

I would be ready for anything. You must have at least some kind of experience to get the position and you receive some training, but some things will pop up that one simply cannot anticipate. Flexibility and being able to thing on your feet are both very useful skills.
