Intern, Internal Audit

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed working with a team of positive people that wanted to invest in my learning as well as working on projects that had a direct impact to the other departments within the bank. I also enjoyed have a speaker series through the internship to learn about different facets of the organization.

What I wish was different

I would have enjoyed being able to work in different teams to see more of the work the entire department does and further experience different areas in finance.

Advice

Stay "aggressively ambitious" throughout the internship as my manager would say. Keeping a positive attitude will help you stay curious and help you find new learning opportunities during the internship.

Leasing & Finance Origination Summer Intern

June - August 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Incredible experience to learn from some extremely smart people. Everyone on the SMBC Leasing & Finance team was amazing to work with. Work varied based on ongoing deals in different stages. Was able to help the team with creating pitchbooks, underwriting deals, financial and credit analysis, industry research, and more. I was in the office 4-5 days a week, which meant I had great facetime with my coworkers, which overall led to more opportunities to learn from and hear from others. It was very easy to access upper management in my group and have genuine discussions. Great opportunities to learn about other groups in the bank as well. Everyone I talked to outside of my group, from analyst level to MD, was happy to sit down and talk to me about their work and experiences. The intern program is excellent with fun intern events happening all throughout the program and speaker events happening multiple times each week. Very valuable to hear from senior management of the bank.

What I wish was different

Some teams are in the office less than others due to ongoing renovations and the nature of the work each team does. I was very fortunate to have a lot of time in person, but some teams do not.

Advice

Set up time to sit down with your team members and understand what they do / what your group does. Do not feel afraid to contact upper management at all! Network outside of your group to learn more about the banking industry and find out more about what you want to do in the future. Do excellent work, but realize that you will make mistakes as an intern. Be eager to learn!

Summer Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the amount of autonomy I had during the internship period. I liked that in order to be involved I had to stick my neck out and really get in touch with the other teams.

What I wish was different

Although the internship was 100% remote, I believe there could've been a better approach to connecting between interns via virtual happy hours or networking sessions.

Advice

If you don't ask, you won't receive. If you aren't busy, ask around to see if anyone can use any help. Also, always be vocal about your pending timelines and bandwidth. Above all, be an asset where you can and not a burden.

Risk Management Intern

June - August 2021 • White Plains, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work on a meaningful project, and being treated like an equal member of the team, not just an intern. The work I did had a meaningful impact on the future of the Liquidity Risk Team. I was able to work closely with the FRBNY and higher-ups within the bank.

What I wish was different

Advice

It is extremely important to go into your internship eager to ask questions and to learn. Throughout my program, I made a point to clarify my knowledge and learn as much as possible each time I was introduced to a new concept. Not only does this help you learn more about the industry, it also shows the members of your team that you care about learning as much as possible.

Leveraged Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the company culture as it was very open to having interns participate in all of the steps of the deal process, which gave me a great opportunity to learn. In addition, the intern activities in the company such as a volunteer day and a group case study allow you to get a more global perspective of the company.
