SMC Corporation of America

Account Manager (Advertising)

January 2017 - July 2020 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

Being on the revenue-generating side of things. Although I don't like sales I like being close to the real business action.

What I wish was different

Corporations make people crazy. See the book "Bad Company: The Joys, Sorrows and Mind-Numbing Frustrations of Working with Other People" by Dorian LaGuardia.

Advice

Whenever you run into frustrations, rephrase them as questions and type them into Google. You'll almost always find something good. Break your job down into separate knowledge specialties and then Google "best books for X" for each one. I broke mine down into: Pneumatics (the best books for understanding are textbooks, the training you get from your company tends to become rote lists of product features because it's copy/pasted from marketing material) Sales (complicated and breaks out into many subskills, e.g. eating healthy while living on the road). B2B with big companies (Jill Konrath has the best book on this) Automotive industry project management (SAE has the best books on this) Managing from below (HBR has a collection of essays on this)
