Smith Micro Software

Software Quality Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I liked meeting the variety of different people that are involved in the software development process. How those people interact in a professional setting, and what a normal timeline looks like for a project, and the maintenance of that project.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the opportunity to work with the developers more than I had. My job was to test iOS and Android apps through developing tests, and automating those tests as much as possible. That being said, I had a good amount of interaction between the developers. We would discuss issues we discovered, and then figure out a schedule for correcting those issues. I did not fully dive into what they were doing on a daily basis though, and I wish I had learned more about the difference between development and quality engineering.

Advice

Try to put yourself out there as much as possible. Fail fast, and fail often. Your boss will appreciate you and your work if you are diligent in making sure you are performing the right task, and performing it correctly. Even if you have to ask a ton of questions in the beginning, that is much better than wasting more of you and your bosses time by doing your work incorrectly or lazily.
