Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

Katzenberger Foundation Art History Intern

June - August 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked that I got to experience what is it like to work in a museum setting. It was great to be able to use my background in art history to create educational programs about the artists featured in the exhibit.

What I wish was different

I wish that it wasn’t virtual, but given circumstances I understand. I also wish that I had been better at establishing what my goals were for the internship and asking my advisor to give me more feedback.

Advice

I didn’t think I would ever have a chance if getting this internship, so you really never know!! Always apply to things and don’t limit yourself.

Archival Curatorship and Outreach Intern

June - August 2019 • Suitland, MD

What I liked

The freedom to explore what was most interesting to me, the interpersonal skills I developed, and the amazing mentors I had.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken advantage more of the opportunity to do original archival research, and maybe I could have had something published academically.

Advice

In such a big organization, the connections you can make are infinite! There were so many talks and opportunities to network. You might get burnt out if you try and talk to everyone, so definitely make priorities about what's most interesting to you.

NHRE Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

everything: the city was great, the museum was awesome, the program and the people I worked with were all really cool and interesting.

What I wish was different

D.C. is pretty hot and humid but I don't think that's going to be getting better anytime soon, and the museum was well air conditioned.

Advice

It never hurts to apply. I applied to this program on a whim while looking at a bunch of summer employment opportunities and the next thing you know I'm an intern at the American Museum of Natural History for a summer!
