Smithsonian Science Education Center

intern

June - August 2022 • Washington, DC

What I liked

We had plenty of time for individual work as well as networking with other Smithsonian interns and heads of departments. I was introduced to the idea of "Big" Smithsonian and "little" Smithsonian which showed how even the smallest sectors of an institution still reach and affect people. It was also my first time working with Adobe applications and I feel that I could apply my teachings to making graphics for schoolwork and my various organizations. My supervisors were always encouraging and I felt very safe and appreciated every day.

What I wish was different

When signing up for the program, I thought this would be a public history centered experienced and was surprised that I was placed here. I do have a passion for education and this internship showed me the landscape of public education and how the Smithsonian plays a part in making it equitable. I do wish that I had the opportunity to express that I wanted to work in a museum and educate through those sorts of institutions.

Advice

Self-management is the key to internships like this. Supervisors expect you to be able to "self-start", which is a valuable tool if you wish to work in a corporate space.
