Ancillary Systems Engineering Intern

What I liked

Their internship program is highly organized. The people are fantastic, all very nice and helpful. The pay is better than expected for an internship. The office and assembly building and testing facilities (got a tour even though I was remote) are awesome. Very communicative, learned a lot about CFD, team project development, working with a partner, developing models, and maintaining a schedule. Shoutout to the Ancillary Strategy Group of SPE in Kearny Mesa.

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was great!

Advice

Please join a club! That's largely why I scored an interview. Don't be scared with Solar, they did not throw me into the fire or anything. It would be wise to have a basic understanding of Agile and of Gas Turbines.

Gas compressor test engineer intern

What I liked

Solar has a great culture in their employees and they work to make their interns feel involved in the company. I gained a strong understanding of specify engineering principles relating to gas compressors and turbines. My supervisor worked hard to help me get exposure throughout the company. I was also able to apply my expertise and was able to suggest a solution department challenge which became my next project. I enjoyed the opportunity to pursue my own idea.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been longer! I really enjoyed it and was sad to leave. I also wish I had been given more projects from the start, thought I was able to identify needs which gave me the freedom to have a say in some of the projects I picked. Also, some days are slow in the test cells.

Advice

Get involved ASAP! Ask people questions! At Solar almost everyone loves sharing knowledge. Take responsibility yourself and suggest to your supervisor tasks that you could do.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

What I liked

The hiring manager for manufacturing engineering at Solar Turbines is very nice and he worked hard to let us manufacturing engineering interns work on site 3 days a week during the COVID-19 pandemic. I liked working on the manufacturing floor and everyone I met was very nice. The upper level management spent many hours of their time talking to us interns over zoom, and their vision for the future of the company seems realistic and positive.

You are given quite a bit of independence in your work, especially since there is a good chance your menor will be off-site for a large part of the summer
