Solutions International

research intern

August 2020 - February 2021 • Laguna Beach, CA

What I liked

Solutions International was a really great internship opportunity for improving my practical research and writing skills. The research was interesting as I got to learn about many innovative clean energy and infrastructure technologies and projects. Furthermore, the team at SI is very understanding of your time commitments and accommodated to remote work well by allowing flexible work hours as long as you complete your work in a timely manner.

What I wish was different

I would have liked there to be more collaboration and interaction with other interns and higher-ups; however, this was understandably limited because of the need for the role to go online due to the pandemic.

Advice

Go the extra mile to interact with management and get feedback on your work to get the most out of the internship.

What I liked

Working with Solutions International was a really great flexible internship opportunity for the remote Fall Semester. The research was really interesting and focused a lot on clean energy and innovation in the transportation field which I found quite interesting. They are very accomodating of your schedule and you can really work whenever you are able.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been some more collaboration amongst other researchers, but that would have been a bit tough with the flexible nature of the position. Overall it was very good.

What I liked

It was a great experience and insight into many different industries that otherwise I would have never explored. The staff was accomodating and quick to help out with any question or assistance. I also enjoyed how understanding of my school schedule they were and eased up on work during midterms.

It's a great opportunity for someone that has a complicated schedule.

What I liked

The internship was less structured and allowed me to pursue what I wanted to learn about. After attending webinars and researching some of the many industries SI works within, the firm gave me the opportunity to dig into a few in-depth and it proved to be an unrestricted learning experience. It gave me a broad sense of several industries, and how they work with the public sector to improve overall lives in cities through P3s. It is also satisfying knowing some of the work that I did could potentially end up positively impacting the surrounding community. Overall, the experience was amazing, I learned a lot, and s/o to Anthony for being a great support throughout.

What I wish was different

Given the circumstances with COVID-19, this would have been a challenge, but I thought there could have been more interaction among the interns. For the most part, it was independent research. I would've liked to see some collaborative teams come together, to get a better sense of direction and also to just bounce ideas off of each other.

Advice

I think it's important for undergraduate students to keep an open mind while interning, this opportunity is a great way to do that, and learn more about what you want to do. As I said, this will teach you a lot about several industries and I think if you are open to learning, this will be a valuable experience.
