Health and Wellness Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked working with the residents at the locations and facilitating the "Healthy Body, Healthy Soul" class.

What I wish was different

I wish my supervisor's attitude was better towards me. We agreed that I would come in 10-12 hours a week while a different intern had to come in 40 hours a week. She spent more time building a relationship with the other intern and basically acted like I wasn't really needed there. I think she underestimated how often she needed me to be there. The other intern had keys to the intern office, a desktop, and the desk. I had to sit at the corner of the desk and was told to work on a tiny laptop that somehow became my responsibility to go get every time I came in. Also, my supervisor mentioned a stipend once at the beginning then never again. I believe the other intern was paid and not me because I noticed sometimes they would have conversations with the door closed while I waited in the hall. I did not feel like we were a Health and Wellness team. I felt left out a lot.

Advice

I would like to share that the residents are very kind and just need a helping hand. The residents that we taught were very grateful for us coming in and being there for them. The Health and Wellness portion of the company was only one person it seemed so I don't think she needed unpaid interns I think she needed assistants that would be there year round.
