Swim coach

January 2017 • Bountiful, UT

What I liked

I am the head coach of the developmental program at the rec center, so I take kids that are just starting their competitive career and teach them, essentially, the foundations of how to swim fast. I love seeing the kids compete, and succeed. I love my coworkers. They are highly motivated and hardworking individuals who love the sport as much as me. I love to community of excellence we have created at SDAT

What I wish was different

I wish we had more space and resources. We don’t have enough pool space to allow more kids to compete with us. I wish we could offer more swim meets or practice opportunities. Maybe even seminars about competition. I also wish we could buy new starting blocks or lane lines. I also wish that the other patrons that we share the facility with are not rude to myself or my assistant coaches. Nearly every day I was yelled at for simple giving my kids the lane space they had payed for and needed for practice. It was very frustrating. I wish that the general population that utilize the facility were not so entitled. My kids pay fees to have lanes to swim in. It’s not just a general admission fee of $3-$5, and we shouldn’t be treated poorly just because other people don’t understand that.

Advice

Stand your ground but be understanding and kind. If someone got upset with me, I would calmly say “I am so sorry, I totally understand...” and it generally would diffuse the situation. In terms of how I run my team and manage my assistant coaches, I keep everyone in a very consistent schedule, but I stay flexible. I work with kids that are generally 10-13, so if they are having a day where they just can’t focus if they aren’t swimming they way they need to we take a different approach. If my assistant coaches don’t understand why we are doing a workout, I try to take a different approach and explain it differently. Just learn how to teach, and to really build a relationship with the athletes and you will become a better coach.
