Researcher

July - August 2020 • Carbondale, IL

What I liked

I loved how much knowledge I obtained from being in this program. To be completely honest, I learned more in 2 months than I did in my entire college career. Mainly because the McNair program taught me about personal and professional development which is what matters most at the end of the day. If you cannot make yourself a strong candidate, then there is no way you can get a job that thousands if not millions of other individuals are looking for.

What I wish was different

I think the only thing I would've changed was the time period I participated in this program. Unfortunately, COVID-19 was a big obstacle we had to overcome but overall the experience was still good.

Advice

I would tell the person who was in the program to make sure they take this serious and absorb all the knowledge! This literally opened my eyes and now I can no longer look at the world the same way. Additionally, be ready to get out of your comfort zone. No one can push you harder than yourself. Learn to feel uncomfortable because you can never grow if you start to become comfortable with where you are. Strive to want more not less.

What I liked

It gave me a look into what professionals in their field work on. Got me an opportunity to work on a paper that eventually got published.

What I wish was different

At least gotten some credit on the paper because I did a lot of work but got no credit.

Advice

Ask the professor what you could do to get your name published on the paper as well.

Very school oriented, allowing me to learn more about the industry than you can through classes.

What I wish was different

There are many regulations considering hours that sometimes force you to leave before the job is done due to having too many hours on the clock.

Advice

Do not be afraid to take on new challenges in the job even if it puts you out of your confort zone. You can learn a lot of you take on the new challenges.

Application Developer

July 2017 • Carbondale, IL

What I liked

The atmosphere and the team that I work with are great. There is a lot of work to get done but it is never feels crazy overwhelming.

What I wish was different

There really isn't anything that I can think of that I would change. Possibly more money but the benefits and the atmosphere are good enough to offset the salary.

Advice

Learn as much as you can in SQL. Knowing how to write queries and interact with data in a relational database is huge for any enterprise level application development position.

Undergraduate Researcher

May - August 2019 • Carbondale, IL

What I liked

I received training from my professor on plant identification and surveying techniques. I was challenged in my ability to identify plants as well as critical thinking skills to help design a project that could expand for several years in the future. I was given all the resources to succeed and that helped me to become more invested I. Research and the pursuit of becoming a scientist!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have spent more time learning about the many effects that ecology has in agriculture. It is a very large topic and takes many people years to truly understand, so I know it will take a bit of time for me to begin to develop that knowledge.

Advice

I never knew that I could be a part of designing a scientific experiment that could has significance in the world of science. It is a challenge developing these skills but totally worth every night spent studying and every early morning. If you have the vaguest interest in plants, consider a career in agriculture!
