St. Mary's College of Maryland

About St. Mary's College of Maryland

As The National Public Honors College, St. Mary’s College of Maryland offers an undergraduate liberal arts education and small-college experience like those found at exceptional private colleges. St. Mary’s College shares the hallmarks of private institutions: an outstanding faculty, talented students, high academic standards, a challenging curriculum, small classes, a sense of community, and a spirit of intellectual inquiry. But as a state institution of higher education, St. Mary’s College is also committed to the ideals of affordability, accessibility, and diversity. By combining these virtues of public and private education, St. Mary’s College provides a unique alternative for students and their families. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is named for the place it marks: the 17th-century capital of Maryland. The spectacular waterfront setting is in the heart of the Chesapeake Bay region. The campus is 75 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. and 97 miles south of Baltimore.

Community Health Outreach Worker

May 2023 St. Mary's City, MD
“As a Community Health Outreach Worker (CHOW) for St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM), I was able to participate in some really fulfilling and meaningful work in service of the St. Mary's County community and its disadvantaged residents. The work environment was friendly, and I was able to build a great rapport with my boss, my coworkers, and even the staff at some of the local institutions we collaborated with (food pantries, soup kitchens, the local health department, etc.). The pay is good, especially considering how rewarding the work already is. I also like that the employers recognize the difficulty of holding a job during the school year, and how that's reflected in the options they offer students for part-time employment. Ultimately, I have nothing but good things to say about this position. I had a lovely time working for CHOWs this summer, and I hope to continue working for them in a part-time capacity over the rest of my time at SMCM.”
