SUNY Oneonta

Camp Counselor

July - August 2022 • Oneonta, NY

What I liked

I am an education major, and for this summer camp we focused on video game design. Myself and the other camp counselor who is also an Ed. major put together power points designed like lessons, and we demonstrated to our campers how to design videogames as if we were teaching them. To them, it was summer camp, but to us in a way it was like field experience practice.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to have incorporated a better activity for break time. We set up my Nintendo switch console and let the kids play a tournament against each other in a game they all liked and knew how to play (Super Smash Brothers), and ate snacks. We are hosting the camp next summer, and instead I would like to take the kids outside for snack with chalk or another outdoor activity.

Advice

I would say that the other camp counselor and I could have practiced demonstrating our lesson with a friend who was using the software for the first time to make sure our explanation was clear enough. When it is your job to be in front of a group of people teaching them how to do something, you should have your methods as prepared as you can.

I enjoyed learning to work with the public as well as creating public programming to increase our science outreach in the community.

What I wish was different

I wish there had not been such a long gap of time between the old director leaving and the university hiring a new director.

Advice

This is a great opportunity for students interested in science outreach programming as well as facilitating informal science learning for people of all ages.
