What I liked

The overall experience was great! I liked the fact that i was able to be involved in real projects, and I was able to contribute to the team. I also loved the fact that the company cares about their employees, and they care about their career growth. I was able to learn a lot with this internship and expand my skillset.

What I wish was different

There's nothing i want to change about my experience. It was such a great learning experience!

Advice

Everything can get too overwhelming, and it's always important to take a breather and make the most out of the experience. Ask questions and get involved are some of the best ways to make most out of the internship experience.

Sales Specialist

May - August 2021 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

I loved talking to new people everyday. I learned about so many different jobs there are. I loved hearing about the history some people had and their stories. The environment was great and really positive. The people in my department always wanted to help move you onto the next thing.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've gotten to explore more in the different departments. There are 165 different departments and I wish I could've gotten the chance to meet more people and find out what they do.

Advice

It's a great experience but repetitive. It can get boring sometimes. My sales manager was very laid back and they trust you. They're a great atmosphere to be in!

Excel and SAS experience are extremely helpful as they are the main two software that an intern will work in. I had lots of excel experience and no SAS experience, but I was still successful in this internship.

Personal Lines Underwriting Intern

May 2018 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed how organized the internship program was and how the interns were assigned real-life work, and not just busy-work throughout the summer. I also really enjoyed being put on a project that incorporated interns from a variety of different departments (IT, accounting, etc.). It allowed me to not only expand my network, but work with different mindsets to form a solution to a difficult problem.

Insurance Underwriting Intern

May - August 2018 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

The training I experienced was very beneficial. In addition, I was able to complete a summer long project for my department, and then also participate in a company wide group project with interns from other departments. They did a great job of allowing me to make a real contribution to the company.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have been in a different role than insurance underwriting.

Advice

To reach out to professionals in your department and other departments to talk about their job experience and career path. Most people are always willing to sit down and talk with you, and this helps you build a larger network.

Claims Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Fairfield, OH

What I liked

CIC held many classes and events that allowed me to learn about all of the functions, skills, and opportunities which exist within the wide world of insurance. Teams of interns worked on a summer-long project, which we presented to managers, coworkers, and even executives. The project was completely intern-led, so teams could make the best or worst of it depending on their drive. In my department, there was always useful work to be done, and there were occasionally opportunities to solve special problems or help out with unique events.

What I wish was different

The day-to-day work in my department was very repetitive (not that anyone could have necessarily changed that) and my hours were very rigid - other interns could show up late so long as they stayed late, but I had to be there 8a to 4:45p no matter what. The intern coordinators also failed to live up to their promises of cross-department experiences - the only people who got to do this this were those that reached out to the departments personally.

Advice

This internship is ultimately a good experience so long as you are open minded enough to learn from it and not be turned off by supposedly "outdated" practices or the aging executive team. Also remember that you're lucky to have an internship at all, so don't complain about how much they pay or what they expect you to do - if you can't handle this, then you can't handle the real world.
