What I liked

I was incredibly blessed to be offered an internship this last summer with the Garzella Group in Scottsdale, AZ. I have been interested in construction my whole life and have really had an interest in protecting the owner, and the contractor from construction risks that are associated with projects. One of the ways I got to make an impact was by using my previous work experience to see risks on projects from a schedule standpoint. There are many delays that can impact a job negatively. Things like equipment breaking down, to weather delays, to the market changing pricing for materials such as steel. All of these can delay a job from getting done. However, if you communicate with your team and your client, a lot of these risks can be addressed and can mitigated with proper planning.

What I wish was different

I would not change anything. I was blessed to have an internship in a industry I love, and I got to see firsthand what I would have to learn to be able to do my dream job someday.

Advice

I believe a lot of our experiences in our life impact and shape us in other experiences outside of work. There are always going to be challenges that can delay our goals and dreams from coming to fruition. But with good preparation, practice, and consistency for excellence, there are always little things we can do to give ourselves the best chance to reach those goals in life and win. Things like eating healthy, making our bed in the morning, having a clean house, and having good hygiene are all small things that we need to do right. And if the small things in life are done right, we have a lot of those habits and lessons help us so that we can do the big things right. That was my takeaway from my internship this summer. I had to have good communication, and work hard to stay in front of the risks that could have impacted my clients project. Thankfully, I had a team that communicated well so that everyone involved was in the loop. We all knew where we were, where we were going, and how we were going to get to the finish line. Overall, my internship taught me so much more about construction sureties and insurance, it taught me fundamentals that I can use the rest of my life. I am forever grateful for this opportunity.
