The Hill Group

Project Engineer Intern

June - August 2021 • Franklin Park, IL

What I liked

I liked the concepts and the work.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more work…out of a 5 day work week on average there were 2-3 days in which I had nothing to do.

Advice

Depending on your group, depends on how much you are taught. Because for me there was not enough material to keep me interested

What I liked

I loved the people that I got to work with every day. The Hill Group takes pride in their company culture that is uplifting, inclusive, and built upon teamwork. In addition, I liked the hands-on work experience I received while visiting job sites.

What I wish was different

I wish the flow of projects and work to do was consistent. There were days that I was very busy, and there were days where there wasn't much to do.

Advice

I would advice others to not be afraid to ask questions to your boss or in meetings, as communication is key!

Project Engineer Intern

May - July 2019 • Franklin Park, IL

What I liked

I loved how independent I was in the work I was doing. I definitely had guidance and instructions, but I also had the freedom to do my own work that made a difference within the company. My work mattered, which can be rare to say for most internships.

What I wish was different

I wish the interns were given more opportunities to bond over the course of the summer. There was not any "intern housing", as we all originally lived in the Chicagoland area, so our only interactions were at work. It would have been nice to develop a more personal connection with the other interns through more company-driven events.

Advice

After interning with The Hill Group, I would advice college students with similar internships in the engineering industry to not be afraid to ask questions. Your employers and fellow interns are there to help you and assist you along the way. Asking questions is the #1 way to make sure your work is correct and productive!

Project Engineer

May - August 2018 • Franklin Park, IL

What I liked

The opportunity to do an actual mock bid as if we were actually working with Hill. They gave us a task to come up with our own design for heating and ventilation throughout a whole office area and warehouse. The goal was to have a price that would be reasonable enough to bid off to the company we were selling our work too.

What I wish was different

I somewhat wish I was able to learn more about what the other interns had going on. My intern position was more focused on HVAC. I wish I could've took a week and learned more about the fire protection or even plumbing.

Advice

This being my first internship I learned a lot from the other Engineers. Even through they stayed busy with upcoming dates they always made time to sit down and help me learn and teach the whole process of what they do on a day to day basis.
