The Salvation Army Pine Summit Camp & Conference Center

Camp Counselor

June - August 2018 • Big Bear Lake, CA

What I liked

I loved being able to work with children in general but I enjoyed this job specifically because it focuses on working with children who due to unfortunate circumstances end up living in under-served communities. As their camp counselor, I was able to build close relationships with the children. One of the great things about this camp is that teaching the word of God to children is one of their main priorities. It was an amazing experience to watch the children enjoy all of the activities and come to Jesus through worship, prayer, and community.

What I wish was different

I wish my co-workers would have been as invested as I was in the children. Most of them were there for the money, but the most important thing about working at this job is the children.

Advice

Be ready to work long hours, but in the end it will be completely worth it. Also, do not underestimate the emotional toll that this job can take on you. These children come from harsh backgrounds and we, as their counselors try to give them a sense of safety, even if it is just for one week. This job is about investing your time into a child that might never again receive the opportunity to come to christ. It is an amazing experience.

I great time to learn new skills and work with kids. The friendships formed are undeniably strong.

What I wish was different

I wish things were a bit more organized and I knew what I were to do sooner than I was actually told.
