Climate Science Research Intern

May - August 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

My supervisors, Jamie and Sharon, were awesome! They both have wonderful attitudes, open minds, and a willingness to help. My internship experience helped me expand the way that I think about issues surrounding Climate Change. I realized that when I state my position on climate change, or really any politically charged topic, I haven't fully evaluated where I got that information or the credibility of the source.

What I wish was different

It was difficult at times to keep myself motivated since the work was remote. For the most part, I could choose my own schedule, which seemed nice, but was more difficult to actually stick to. I wish I would've had the opportunity to meet my coworkers in person.

Advice

I would suggest communicating with your supervisors about anything that you're struggling with related to the internship. I had a hard time the first week because I was given a project that ended up needing significantly more time than the 10-15 hours that were allocated for the internship. However, when I talked to my supervisors and realized that others were having a similar experience, we were able to target the problem.

Grant Writing Intern

June - August 2019 • Fort Lauderdale, FL

What I liked

The collaborative experience and the opportunity to explore different types of writing.

What I wish was different

I just wish there had been more opportunities to apply to more grants and write out full applications.

Advice

Get to know everyone you work with! Its a great opportunity to network and learn about the non-profit world.

Grant Research Intern

June - September 2019 • Riverside, CA

What I liked

It was an extremely supportive work environment, the experience definitely helped me grow as a person and a writer. They are very flexible and I liked that I didn't have to relocate at my own expense like many other internships I applied for, and I still got to go enjoy my summer rather than working 8+ hours a day for 3 months.

What I wish was different

I wish projects were listed somewhere slightly in advance (when that is feasible) because some weeks I wouldn't have much work but others were more intense, and it would have been nice to get a head start on those on the light weeks.

Advice

Stay on top of your hours so you track them accurately, and try to have your work done at least a day and a half in advance in case you have to change something or you hit an unexpected roadblock. Also, never hesitate to ask Jamie or Sharon for help or feedback, they are happy to give it and will always make time in their busy schedules for you!
