What I liked

I was truly grateful to have the opportunity to have a hands-on teaching experience right after my first year at Colby. I truly enjoyed helping the lead teachers develop their curriculum for the students, and I truly appreciated the positive experience I had with the students. I was inspired by the passion that the youths in Maine had about writing and the stories they were willing to share with their peers. This internship was a great assurance for me to continue my interest in the field of education!

What I wish was different

I wish that I had more experience going into the internship. At times, being one of the youngest interns, I felt like I had limited knowledge on certain areas. However, this allowed me to grow as an individual and learn useful skills which I still utilize today as an education intern at the Colby College Museum of Art.

Advice

If you are passionate about writing and educating the youth, this is the perfect internship for you. The Telling Room is more than just a youth writing center. It is a home to those who have stories they feel like they need to be told but are not sure how to go about it. The Telling Room fosters a warm, nurturing environment for students to feel comfortable, challenged, and engaged in the art of writing.
