Student Employee

January 2018 • Oxford, MS

What I liked

The hours were very flexible and the workload was manageable. I really appreciated how my class schedule was considered when scheduling shifts.

What I wish was different

I think the only thing that I would improve is simply having more students assisting. We did not have very many employees overall, which made the workload overwhelming at times.

Advice

I would say that it's most important to look in odd places for jobs. I found mine through inquiring with multiple people on campus who then pointed me in the direction of that student job. I had not even realized that the department existed, much less was hiring! Start speaking to professors and other campus staff and they can help you out. All it took from me was an email with my resume to score a on-campus interview and then, thankfully, I was hired!

Animal Caregiver

August 2019 • Oxford, MS

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about and performing aviary husbandry, blood withdraws, and dissections.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more free time to spend in the lab to learn even more about the blood work and genetics.

Advice

You have to be committed; don’t mind getting messy; and handling things like worms, aviary waste, organs, and blood. Proper precautions are taken in handling these hazards. Just make sure you have the stomach for it. It’s perfect for anyone responsible and has an interest in animals. I enjoyed it immensely the whole experience!
