What I liked

Software Engineer Intern

July 2019 - September 2022 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

I got to go into the office for work and met great people there. The campus had a convenience store and even a Subway.

What I wish was different

With Covid I got shifted to a remote role, didn't get to see co-workers much. For some big tasks (mainly QA / Testing), I didn't really have someone to learn from or to guide me.

Advice

Good place to work and nice people, reach out!

Marketing Intern

May - August 2022 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

The culture at Thomson Reuters was great. Everyone was always willing to meet with me, help me with resources for projects, or just expand my network. Everyone was very kind, very supportive, and welcoming.

What I wish was different

Structure for the capstone project was a bit vague, which made the final few weeks very difficult. In the end, the project turned out well, but it definitely took a lot of personal initiative and action.

Advice

Utilize all your networking resources and opportunities while at Thomson Reuters! There are so many valuable experiences!

Content Marketing Intern

June - August 2021 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

I loved how welcoming TR was! Everyone I spoke to, even those who were outside of my team, were very kind and willing to help out an intern. I also loved my manager. She provided me with enough work and help, but didn't overwhelm or micromanage me. The internship program as a whole is great as well. There are HR and Marketing-specific events. These included executive speakers, volunteer events, fun Fridays, marketing skill sessions, and networking opportunities. Overall, a great environment to work in and get exposed to the corporate world.

What I wish was different

I wish I had multiple points of contact to give me work. I only had my manager, but I know other interns would get work from other people on their team as well.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and set up 1 on 1s with other people in the organization. Your internship is yours, so if a different team or project interests you, seek it out!

Digital Marketing Intern

June 2021 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

I worked at FindLaw, a subsidiary of Thomson Reuters. Everyone, and I mean literally almost everyone, offered their help if I ever needed it. The entire company was very focused on employee growth, not just within the organization but as a person entirely. I learned so much through my internship.

What I wish was different

The initial training process is meant to accommodate everyone and make sure know employee is left behind. This is a benefit for most people, but if you are a fast learner the initial orientation phases will seem a bit tedious. If you're patient, you will get the chance to accelerate your learning and challenge yourself.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for help from anyone; they're always willing to lend a hand.

Paid Search Intern

June - August 2021 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

Thomson Reuters has an incredibly inclusive community where everyone wants to see the interns succeed. We were given control over our projects throughout the summer, but could reach out to anyone in the company and get eager help.

What I wish was different

I had a remote internship which allowed me to do all of the work I would have been able to do in person. But after seeing people go into the office, I wish I had the opportunity to connect with people in person.

Advice

Thomson Reuters is full of motivated and intelligent employees, so make sure you are leveraging their skills and background to ask questions and help out on projects.

Talent Acquisition Intern

May - August 2021 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

TR has a fantastic onboarding process that kicks of your journey with the company. They have fantastic training and the team was open and communicative about expectations and initial duties. Working for TR I have gained everything an intern is looking for through an internship. Not only have I gained skills and experience, but I have also gained a more focused vision for a company I would consider joining in the future as well as a greater appreciation for teamwork, communication, and connections. Each person within the company was always more than willing to showcase the work they were doing and was excellent at training. At TR, there is a sense of appreciation from the top down and that shows in the morale and energy of the employees across departments.

What I wish was different

Some management felt almost too busy. This company has gone through many different reorgs and at times you can feel that disconnect between those that are still operating within the previous model of business. Managment is trying their best to ensure that all corners are covered within that re-org, shifting, and turn over.

Advice

If you are considering a company to work for in the MSP area, this is a top-notch decision.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Culver City, CA

What I liked

Interns had very easy access to mentors on the teams, who were able to give very good guidance on our projects. They were not overly directive though, and allowed us the freedom to work on the things that interested us most. I learned a lot by being able to work on many different aspects of the technology.

Research Intern

May - November 2020 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

This internship gave me unique experiences and mentorship that has helped me grow as a young professional. I was able to work on a project independently that generated value for the company which allowed me to take a lot of pride in my work.

What I wish was different

I wish that the experience could have been in-person, but because of the COVID19 pandemic this was not possible.

Advice

Take advantage of the connections that you can make throughout the internship! There are so many different divisions of the company that can fit with your interests and provide opportunities in the future.

Software Developer Intern

May - August 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

Nice company culture. Humble executives. They are open to questions and want you to learn. I got to work on an actual project which was building a mobile app, rather than low level busy work. Learned many things throughout the process. Also they made the internship virtual for Covid.

What I wish was different

If the plan for the project was more defined earlier, that would have helped progress be done faster. But considering this was the first project of its kind, and Covid happened, I guess it is understandable. Overall, things were good.

Advice

If you need help, ask questions. They want you to ask questions and they want to help you. Also it is better for everyone when you don't spend TOO much time being lost.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2020 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I loved how my mentor and other software engineers treated me. I learned a lot from them. Also, being able to work with Agile software development practices made me a better software engineer.

What I wish was different

I wished I had been told what languages and frameworks I would need to know in advance so I could've prepared for the internship better. I had to learn TypeScript and C# which are parts of Angular and .NET frameworks. These tools are not taught in school.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. I asked my mentor and other software engineers a lot of questions. Some of them were not in my team but they were happy to help.

Technology Intern

June - August 2020 • Culver City, CA

What I liked

Collaborative environment with supportive team members, mentors, and managers. Many opportunities to hear from executives and professionals about their experiences and fields.

What I wish was different

Remote setting due to COVID-19 so there was reduced interaction/communication between different teams resulting in less exposure to a variety of fields.

Advice

Go in with an open mind and a willingness to learn!

Software Sales Intern

May - August 2020 • Ann Arbor, MI

What I liked

I loved how approachable and helpful everyone is at the company, you don't have to rely solely on your managers for feedback or advice. You can reach out to pretty much anyone at the company, even the C suite will find time to answer your questions or give you advice. Real and valuable sales training, I am so much more confident in my sales abilities and techniques and this internship was a tremendous growth and learning experience for me. Even in a virtual format, TR made every effort to ensure we were in the best position to succeed and gave us all the resources we needed to excel in our roles.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person, although gaining experience via a virtual platform could prove to be extremely helpful in our constantly changing world. There is nothing that can make up for going into the office and getting to experience the culture and day to day of the office. I will say TR did everything in their power to make it as close to the physical internship as they could, and all of the interns were impressed!

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help, this was definitely a big lesson I learned from the internship. If you have questions, ask them! If you're curios about something, reach out and learn more! Everyone at TR is willing to help, you just have to ask.

Legal Marketing Intern

May - August 2020 • Eagan, MN

What I liked

I loved how amazing the culture is at TR everyone is extremely welcoming and friendly. Expect to be involved in different projects and be ready to learn. This was an amazing experience. While I was unable to be in the office TR still made the internship amazing!

What I wish was different

This was not in anybody's control but we had to pivot to being virtual due to COVID. However, they truly did the best they could!

Advice

Come prepared and with an open mind. Always be ready for different projects that might push you a little out of your comfort zone. If you need a little help along the way, it's okay, you will still do great!
