Toast, Inc.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I had an amazing time working at Toast! First, I think their product solves a really interesting set of problems and it was cool to see it being used regularly in restaurants. The work that I did for my internship let me work with people from multiple teams and I got to follow the project from idea to proposal to completion, which was unexpected given the short timeframe of an internship. I also loved working with my team and received help and collaboration from people on other teams when I needed it. Overall company culture was very welcoming.

What I wish was different

Pretty much the only issue during my internship is that my team was still in the process of finalizing the concept for the project I worked on for the first few weeks, so I didn't get to start on it until a few weeks in. I don't believe other interns had this issue, so I think it was a one-off incident.

Software Engineering Co-op

January - August 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I was treated exactly as a full-time employee, there wasn't any 'intern busy work' or anything like that. The culture is also great, everything is very relaxed. Everyone wore casual to business casual clothes, everyone is really nice and there wasn't ever a lot of pressure.

What I wish was different

That I stayed instead of coming back to classes

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't know something. If you don't know something it's better to say that and get guidance than wasting time pretending to do something.
