What I liked

Taking care of people.

What I wish was different

That Psych/detox patients had somewhere stable to go instead of boarding in the ER holding up beds for the really sick people in the waiting room, so the wait time won't be 6-8 hours long. Better pay...

Pre-Med Intern

June - July 2019 • Huntsville, AL

What I liked

I loved shadowing all the different specialties in different areas around the communities. We saw multiple rural and urban clinics along with bigger hospital settings that really opened doors to where I would want to work in the future. The lunch seminars with various physicians, admissions committee members, and staff were amazing because you could form connections with so many different people and really understand what you’re walking into.

What I wish was different

I think seeing more urban areas, especially those with larger ethnic populations and multicultural backgrounds would have been a good contrast to the rural focus. It’s important to see both sides and recognize the specific differences between urban and rural patients. Even though they face similar issues when it comes to healthcare, they do so for different reasons.

Advice

Make a journal about every single day. Take short notes on what you did, who the speakers were and especially why whatever you saw was impactful. Not everything is going to strike a chord and that’s okay. It’s not about remembering the diagnosis or the patients. You want to remember the relationships and conversations and all the little mannerisms that you won’t learn otherwise.
